Timberjack

(1955, USA, 94m)
d/p Joseph Kane sc Allen Rivkin ph Jack A. Marta ed Richard L. Van Enger ad Frank Arrigo m Victor Young cast Sterling Hayden, Vera Ralston, David Brian, Adolphe Menjou, Hoagy Carmichael, Chill Wills, Jim Davis, Howard Petrie, Elisha Cook Jr

Largely unremarkable Republic outdoors picture, nominally a western, but enlivened by the northern timber-country setting. After a sweet opening credits song, the standard-issue plot sees Hayden returning to the family business, locked in rivalry with the unscrupulous boss of the only other logging company in town, who was almost certainly responsible for the death of Hayden’s father. Ralston sings some irrelevant songs, not frightfully well (whilst remaining obstinately blind to her suitor’s obvious villainy), and Carmichael sings a mildly amusing one to his dog. Matters proceed efficiently enough and David Brian’s villain never stands a chance against Hayden, who once again shoulders a film that is well beneath him.
